Not all freedmen served in the Civil War. Of those that served, many did not file for a Pension. However, if you have a relative that DID file, obtain a copy of their pension file immediately.

Although existing prices were a bargain, the proposed fee increases will make obtaining these files prohibitive for most of us outside of the D.C. area. NARA site self-copy costs are also increasing.
