Order Andy Anderson to deliver 4 children of Patsy (deceased) to John Starks, their uncle. States that Anderson is a citizen of good standing and to comply ... will greatly damage him, having lately moved to the county, rented land, and working 2 of the children.
If the order had been served immediately after its issue, he could and would have complied promptly. I have ordered him under the circumstances to retain the children for the present until I can communicate with Capt. Rand. The children are well cared for and I charge him to continue to treat them humanely and provide for their wants.
[Later, the response comes.]
" ... can retain the children of Patty until the 26th of December, 1867 - then return to uncle, John Starks."
