Yes Vicky, this is worth taking the time to look at. I believe I used it in my newspaper course at Family Tree University, and discuss it during my workshop on the Pittsburgh Courier.
The 8 newspaper summaries/overviews give people a very nice history of some influential African American papers, as well as some good references for further study—a nice bonus is that many of the references include theses or dissertations.
What researchers should not ignore is the link to the film itself, which also includes the transcript. I watched this when it aired on my local PBS station and loved it. I’ve seen copies of the program at several libraries; interested parties can do a Worldcat search to see if it is possibly in a library near them.
A year or so ago while doing some work on the internet, I came across what I believe was a blog type post by a woman whose relative worked for the Courier and she shared excerpts from an interview he gave in connection with the production of the film. His description of the marketing/distribution of the paper, which I don’t believe made it directly into the final version, was quite revealing.
