In Response To: Re: Slater -Simmons wed 1901 ()
After a bit of research I found that the Union-Recorder was a white paper in Milledgeville, GA, Baldwin County.
The paper has been digitized and can be found at the URL below. The search engine is a really good one and this paper seems to contain a good deal of news on the African American population of the city/area. In a search on "Alonzo Slater" I came across one article in which a local black church asked the paper to print an article in which it praised the cooperation of local whites in a church project. Slater was a committee member.
My initial research was in the census and I did find the Slater family in 1900 with Dr. Simmons in the house next to them and listed as a boarder. An interesting aside is that in the 1910 census, both Alonzo & his daughter have lost their spouses.
