In Response To: Childrens Death 1876 ()
I believe that what you found on Family Search was the INDEX to the Death Register for Pittslyvania County Virginia 1853 to 1896.
Virginia began keeping a Register of Births and Deaths on a County Level in 1853 and continued until 1896 when it was discontinued except for their Independent Cities (Norfolk, Richmond, etc) for 16 years, then begun again in 1912 on a STATE LEVEL.
Not all births or deaths were recorded, not all records survive for the 1853 to 1896 time frame. But those that do are available on microfilm at the Library of Virginia or thru the Family History Center. Additional information might be available on the register that was not shown on the Index...like cause of death, name of informant..etc
Ordering the microfilm would allow you to review the whole register and possibly answer some of your questions.
For those individuals that were enslaved during the 1853 to 1865 time frame..their births and deaths are recorded...but it is recorded under the name of the Owner..slaves are listed only with first names.
There is also a Pittslyvania County Historical Society, they might be able to provide you with information on what other records are available.
