Hi Tim: Welcome! The reason why you cannot access the Black Newspapers is because ProQuest is not offering free access. The only access to newspapers are the Civil War papers. The page is OK and will help in background information on our ancestors who served in the USCT and their officers. I found viewing the newspapers problematic at times. I've used black newspapers for many years to learn about my ancestors and the times in which they lived. I do hope that our AfriGeneas family will post links to black digitized newspapers that are accessible and at no cost. They are out there. Genealogy Bank, for instance, lists newspapers but their search results are wanting. In addition, there is a fee. Google's black newspapers search results are often difficult to clip and copy. So again, I look forward to finding newspapers that are digitized and accessible in this forum. Many State historical societies and universities offer access to historical archived newspapers (including black ones). For instance, the University of Pennsylvania offers a list of newspapers at the link below. Regards, K Wyer Lane
