Four Chicago Newspapers
In Response To: The Chicago Conservator ()
This posting is somewhat confusing. It comes from the Internet Archive site and is part of the text version of the Colored People's Blue Book & Business Directory of Chicago for the year 1905. When the book was OCR'ed (scanned), there were a number of errors in interpreting the various characters. This post is from the newspaper portion of the directory and lists 4 papers. It is kind of neat to see the Defender listed as this I believe was it's first year of publication.
It is best to look at the directory in it's original format which will not have the errors and even has a few pictures. You can do that by clicking on one of the pdf options when you follow the link provided in The Chicago Conservator post.
Of the 4 papers, all are available on microfilm, although the Conservator & Leader have only a few scattered issues. The Broad Ax(e) over its lifespan was published in Chicago and in Utah (Salt Lake City) and is the only one of the 4 that has extant copies for 1905 although I should note that the few issues for the Conservator are pre-1905. The Broad Ax is digitized and available at the Chronicling America website.
