My earliest ancestral connection to a newspaper was finding the letter of my great great grandfather, Thomas Cole of Princeton, Indiana, to the editor of the Provincial Freeman, a Canadian abolitionist newspaper. The letter was dated February 2, 1857, and appeared in the March 7, 1857 issue of the newspaper. The editor of the paper was an African American.
