I did indeed see For Colored Girls by Mr. Perry. I saw it twice and I honestly wished I had seen it---and may stiill see it in---it's original form. There were some pretty strong images of black in the movie but I would like to know more about the play. This was Ntozake Shange, play and she got to write it the way she saw fit.
I understand where you going with how images of black men are portrayed in this particular movie and medium. We only get one decent black man every few years. In this film Hill Harper's character was the good guy. Yes, I saw Washington in Training Day Remember the Titans and Glory.
I think there is a discussion going about if Tyler Perry isn't making movies who going to do it? Hollywood doesn't seem to interested in stories about black people or more specifically a group of black men doing something positive; it doesn't fit the stereotype. There are black producers and directors out there. I sometimes attend black film festivals and see films Hollywood would never even think about making. I wish Mr. Perry---if he hasn't --goes to black film festivals to find projects that deserve more exposure.
I see what Hollywood puts out. It will never give us a movie where an all black male cast does something positive. It doesn't fit what they think Americans will pay money to see. I have in past frequented black film festivals to get my fill of positive black male images. Besides, doing family history is a counterbalance to anything anyone puts on film.
