There are so many, however here are a few that I thought were very interesting:
Eve's Bayou, in 1997. i thought Jurnee Smollett, who also was in Great Debaters, was good in it.
Soldiers Story with Howard Rollins
Boyz N the Hood with Cuba Gooding and Ice Cube
and Amistad, what also came out in 1997.

I do believe that we should also focus on some of those films that came out in the 1970s which told stories in their own way such as:
