Was it the Triple Nickel?
Hello Military Historians:
A friend of mine who was born and raised in Chartres once told me about her experience during the Liberation of France. Her experience continues to mystify me.
She said when she was a little girl during Liberation, she looked up and saw white parachutes raining down from the skies. She believed that the men who jumped from the planes were "angels". Some of the soldiers were black.
I thought that the paratroopers must have been part of the legendary 555, "The Triple Nickel". After reading the information of its history in the URL below, it couldn't have been them.
Could they have been a British unit? Could they have been another American parachute infantry? Could they have been the 555th?
My friend clearly remembers these men. She said that it was the first time that she saw black men, so there was no mistake as to their ethnicity.
Can someone help me unravel this mystery? Was it the Triple Nickel?
