Re: Winners, Part 3

Sharon:Not immprobable. How about impossible. But I do like the thought of a l40-year old War of l8l2 vet tottering/babbling around the streets of ASmerica in l942. I should have checked the math from the Winners of the West material. Thanks for your sharp eye. Dug deeeper into my files of military records and came up with army Adjutant General's report re pensions as of Sept 30, l942. This document shows the War of l8l2 individual was not a veteran but, as you suspected, a "dependent": also on Adjutant General's list the 93 Mexican War vets are "widows" . Shame on me for passing on info without in depth checking. Shame on Winners of the West for printing it. Additional: Winners of the West got it right, Adj. Gen report shows l,66l Indian Wars vets as of Sept 30, l942--but also that 3,628 "widows, etc...."of these campaigners were still on the pension rolls. Hmmmmmm--these numbers suggest the possibility that marriage may have been more dangerous than military service. Tom Phillips
