Re: Questions about Civil War pension -Dennis WEAV
In Response To: Questions about Civil War pension -Dennis WEAVER ()
You can apply for copies of both his service record and pension application. The pension papers will be the most valuable to you, as they will include affidavits of those testifying to any war-related injury or disease. (For example, 17 members of the 1st were wounded at the Battle of New Market Heights in September 1864-this would be on both his service record and his pension record-so these are records you should send for-be aware, it can take awhile) It may also give you a number of names you don't currently have, as well as the address or addresses he was using at the time, etc. If COD is really CAD, then the AD portion is probably "African Descent" If the letters are reversed, than the COD would be DOC, for District of Columbia, where the unit was raised. Ditto for the USOI-which probably should be USCI for United States Colored Infantry. Best of luck, Sharon
