10th Cav. H Co. May 22,1870, Grierson Papers
On May 22,1870, "Captain Carpenter at Camp Supply with his hard-bitten veterans of H Company, voiced a common complaint in a letter to Grierson. The Tenth was "getting mean wornout horses of the Seventh Cavalry." Some of these trail-weary nags died within days of reaching the post." "Carpenter wrote, "since our first mount in 1867 this regiment has received nothing but broken down horses and repaired equipment as I am willing to testify to as far as my knowledge goes." (I don't believe this complaint was an isolated incident. Page 51, The Buffalo Soldiers, by William H. Leckie)Lloyd
