Re: UNION NAVY - Mississippi River
In Response To: Re: UNION NAVY - Mississippi River ()
Boy do I agree about the details! My main point in answering the posting, was to provide the info on the other records of the Pittsburgh-mostly for the use of WSHS students. I actually know almost nothing about Black Civil War sailors.
Now-if you want to look at inconsistencies, and things that are somewhat laughable (depending on your viewpoint) Your reference was to a pamphlet about the Cairo from the Vicksburg National Military Park. The sailor info I posted came from the CWSS-which is maintained by the National Park Service-and whose material comes from NARA. Shouldn't they have the closest access to their own material????? Lest you think I feel the CWSS is infallible-I do know better. I have records for a number of soldiers who are not listed on CWSS rosters.
As far as details-and myths...I get flogged on a regular basis, just because I am so picky about them. I want original records-not second hand rumors. I get so frustrated when I see the same errors perpetuated in book after book that I could scream! There are so many instances where I pick up some "standard" and highly vaunted work-and the first thing I find-is an event with a wrong name-or date-or regiment. I figure that if I notice it, with my limited knowledge-then to a really good historian-just imagine what they see. The end result is that I no longer trust that book, or author. Everything else in it might be absolutely invaluable, but my trust is gone.
What you said about memories is true also-everything is subjective. Ask 10 people what they saw at any particular event-and you know you will get 10 different answers. In the case of what I am working on, it's trebly difficult. Officers, White Soldiers, Black Soldiers, Union and Confederate-You start with five viewpoints and they become hundreds modified by individual perspective.
Okay....I'll go quietly back to my piles of work to do, and just mumble to myself again........
