Thomas Morris Chester,the famous Black Civil War Correspondent on the Virginia front relates that the 25th Corps, which included the 1st Brigade,the 1st Division, the 2nd Division, the 36th Regiment, the 38th Regiment and other units were assembled at City Point Virginia, which was a Port of Embarkation, on May 13,1865. The 36th and 38th were sent there for a "camp of instruction". About May 22,1865 they f received their "marching orders" to Texas.(He does not give the location in Texas.)He states that the entire Corps was sent on "transports" to Texas, with the exception of one or two regiments.
Brevet General Alonzo G. Draper was Commander of the 1st.Brigade, General Wiliam Birney was Commander of the 2nd Division and later relieved of his command and was succeded by Brig. General Jackson. Thomas Morris Chester states that "the colored troops of Brig. gen. William Birney's division were the first to enter Petersburg."
