Re: John P. Campbell~ Buffalo Soldier
Dear List Members,
In the attempt to aid other researchers I posted over a hundred obituaries from the Phoenix area to VKN. Mr. Campbell was not a relative of mine nor are any of the others. As I am sure you are aware Bennie McCrae has a wonderful military site that would be most appropriate for your comments. As to the content of the obituary, here in Arizona the Buffalo Soldiers are legendary. They were more active in the capture of Geronimo and countering raids by Pancho Villa under General Pershing (that's how he acquired the nickname Black Jack). They were very instrumental in the Tucson area and south even into Mexico. I remember Muhammed Ali stating that he would not go to Viet Nam and kill yellow men for land white men had stolen from red men. Many black men did not have the options that Ali had nor did their Buffalo Soldier ancestors. I guess what I am getting to is that, soldiers seldom fight for philosophies or principles of ethics. The courage and valor of the man will manifest regardless of the political circumstances and this is what we honor. I see genealogy as a positive force unifying us in our common experience of family and history not as a divisive platform for controversy. At any rate, I have a few hundred more obits to post and will do so. Valencia is who I want to be when I grow up as a genealogist. I applaud her efforts and you should too.
