Re: WORLD WAR II -Massacre of Black Soldiers

Hello Bennie:

Thanks so much for posting Fred's story about the ceremony in Belgium honoring the men who were tortured and murdered by the SS. I remember posting their names on the main forum of Afrigeneas. It is amazing how much Fred's father resembles Leonard Smith of the 761st Tank Battalion. "Smitty" was invited by the US Army in Germany and participated in the ceremony too. Members of the 761st and other black units knew all too well of the cruelty of the Waffen SS. They rarely took captured African-American soldiers alive.

The translated article from your site says that the leader of these band of murderers was Colonel Jochen Peiper. Do we know if that is a fact? Peiper will go down in history as the leader (again) of another brutal war crime (again) the "Massacre at Malmedy" where 86 American soldiers were slaughtered...they were "a drag" to guard and care for the wounded so they were just shot to death.

Pieper and his murderous crew were also at the Battle of the Bulge as was Smitty and his fellow "band of brothers" from the 761st Tank Battalion. Perhaps Pieper saw first hand that the "Black Panthers" of Patton's army didn't play.

I would be interested in knowing more details about the history of these African-American units whose men suffered so terribly.
Bless them all.

K Wyer Lane
