Correct - it was an African American unit. Some records show it as the Ninth Battalion Ohio National Guard (1898-99).
Major Charles Young was the Commander and Captain Walter S. Thomas was the Quartermaster Officer.
I have the complete roster and will post soon. It was low on my priority list, but will move it closer to the top.
