WORLD WAR II -Massacre of Black Soldiers
I live in Germany, and I read in the Military Newspaper (Stars and Stripes) published on Nov 20, 2002 an article titled "Town Memorializes Massacred Soldiers" detailing how during WW II eleven African American soldiers of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion were dragged from a kind and sympathetic German Family's house and massacred by the German SS near the Ardennes forest.
The Mathias Langer family had given the soldiers an hour of kindness and a little food before another neighbor in the village (Wereth, Belgium) told the German SS that there were American soldiers at the home, and were dragged outside by the SS and tortured before being bayoneted to death. Their bodies lay for more than a month on the frigid ground until another Army unit found and buried them.
A group of African American military soldiers, members of "The Rocks" organization along with greatful Belgiums, and children of the parents who briefly harbored have donated funding to build a memorial to the eleven. I had not heard of this incident before, and I wonder do the survivors of the 11 know how their loved ones died? I have the article and will provide.
