Reference question for Civil War

Hello,
I was wondering about references to check for families that accompanied soldiers and may have actually worked for the regiment. My gg-grandfather, James A. Comer (b. @1856, Richmond, Va) always told the family he was a little drummer boy in the Civil War, and even reported it on the census (1920). Since he was so young, I wonder if his father G. William Comer (b. 1829, MA) was in the War and took the family along too. While they started out around Richmond, Va, they may have been in Ohio at the time of the war. I find them in 1880 in the North Dakota census. I haven't had much luck finding James in the soldier indexes, perhaps its best to look for William. Is there a way to check on families that accompanied soldiers? If the wife/mother Virginia Comer was a cook for the regiment, would there be records someplace to find out about that?
Thanks very much
