"The Germans called them Schwartze Vogelmenschen, or Black Birdmen." To U.S. bomber crews, they were "Red Tail Angels", for the identifying red paint on the tail assemblies of their fighter planes.
To educate people about their history and to motivate young African Americans to pursue aviation careers,the Tuskegee Airmen have launched what they call the "Red Tail Project". (See entire story at Washpost.com)
