If you check the muster rolls for the 14th Tenn (CS) it lists a man from Clarksville who is noted as being an "F.O.C." ie. a Freeman of Color. I don't know if any one has mentioned this yet but there is a photo of the 3rd Arkansas taken in 1861 that clearly shows an African-American soldier, armed and stading in the ranks.
