Seeking direction and enlightenment:
Are their any surviving (and genuine) C.S.A. company/regimental muster rolls; medical/hospital records, post-war state penision files, that show that blacks (either slave or free) were enlisted as armed soldiers (as opposed to teamsters, cooks, laborers, or personal servants) in Confederate forces (excluding the few blacks enrolled and observed drilling in Richmand during closing days of the war).
And, if blacks did serve as troops in the Confederacy, is there any surviving documentation about their rate of pay.
Flipping the coin, are there any Federal military reports (as opposed to personal correspondence and press accounts) regarding the Confederate use of armed blacks as line troops?
Would appreciate any assistance on this.
Thanks.
