I mentioned that the system is a bit quirky.

The first url will say that you have timed out. Press the OK button and it will take you to this page entitled:

Excelsior: New York State Library/Archives/Museum Catalog

It is MORE THAN A CATALOGUE. Please note:

1)The first button says " All Libraries" Description. click on LOG IN.

2) A new page entitled "Excelsior " will come up.

3) At the top of the page under the name Excelsior is a word "Digital Collections" Click on Digital Collections.

4) The new page lists two folders. The second one says Harlem Hellfighters Collection.

5) Click on that and it will display a category for Muster Rolls. Click on that and it will display categories/years/names by alphabet . You can click on those and search.

It works every time for me. Why this method of searching is so challenging and confusing is a mystery. Perhaps it's because New Yorkers are so smug about their military history, that they want to challenge everyone waiting at the gates of their archives. Or perhaps they are a bit sensitive to the rather maladroit and transparent swipes at their history by "arrivistes" on this military forum.
