Re: Black Jack
In Response To: Re: Black Jack ()
The Nick name “Black Jack” given to Gen. John J. Pershing, predates the Punitive Expeditions and the Spanish American War. He was given the sobriquet not long after he was posted to a unit of the 10th Cavalry, which was stationed in Montana. This would have been ’95-96. The term “Nigger Pershing” was attributed to him as well, but it seems he worn it with pride with the full knowledge that the term was also attributed to Col’s Grierson, Hatch, Nelson Miles, Randald McKenzie and host of other white officers that had distinguish careers leading Colored Troops. All of these officers predated Pershing and their reputations were well known.
