Thanks to the Brooklyn Library, I've uncovered news articles, an interactive map and presentation on Civil War.

newspaper "The Brooklyn Eagle." (1841 to 1902). You can search for articles about their coverage of the Civil War. If you plug in "Negro" "Colored" soldier etc, you'll find articles on African Americans covering the years mentioned above,
