To Jim Ball and Richard Ford: thanks for putting me straight on no wine for the 93rd. I have spent a lot of time knocking down some of the urban legends that have grown up around the service of black regulars in the immediate post-Civil War years. Shame on me for repeating one re the WWI fellows. It won't happen again. The photos I've seen of the 93rd show the soldiers decked out in French "Beau Geste" weapons/equipment. I guess this makes sense for ease of suppy. But why French boots--or did Black Jack loan these guys to the French barefoot?
K Wyler Lane: thanks for the citations re Haitian troops (in French service?) at Savanna in 1779.I'll follow up on these.
And to Sharon Heist: knock it off--I asked about Haitian soldiers at Savanna, not at New Orleans with Andy Jackson.
Overall I learned one thing from the responses to my question: if I ask what time it is on this form I should expect to get immediate instructions on how to build a clock.
