Re: Charles Bush & Major Pelham
In Response To: Re: Charles Bush & Major Pelham ()
One of the stories about Corporal Charles Bush is that he is considered around here to be the first of quite a few Calhoun County (Alabama) heroes. This isn't a recent phenomenon, but he was considered as such during his lifetime. After witnessing so many people that he knew slaughtered in battle, he tended to the bodies as best he could, then picked up Capt. Thos Bush’s sword and the battle flag of the company and carried them back to Alabama with him from Va., where he presented the sword to the Capt’s mother and the flag to the County fathers. One thing, you had said that Charles Bush was born about 1836 and somewhere I had heard he was born around 1845, which would have him as a young teen during that time, which would make his adventures that much more amazing. Anyway, the sword and flag are in the downstairs archives of the Jacksonville City Library.
