The NYC draft riots are a fascinating story. There's a lot of information available on the topic because a lot of Battle of Gettysburg aficionados (of which there are many) study it for its tie to the battle's aftermath. Some Union regiments that fought in the battle had to be diverted from chasing Lee back to Virginia to quell the rioters.
