I remember coming across a similiar incident in Zanesville, Ohio after reading Howard Zinn's, A People's History Of The United States, 1492-Present. If the Zanesville account is true, I wonder if this was the cause of migration by people of color? I have been, perhaps in vain, looking for a newspaper account of the incident in Zanesville, Ohio.
