I have a good portion of his life documented, except for the period during the Civil War. He unfortunately, moved about, until settling in Massachusetts towards the end of the 19th century. I have located a photograph of George T. Downing's family in Newport, Rhode Island, where Downing operated a resort hote., showing presumably his wife and sons-in-law. However, without another photo, I cannot determine which one might be Mark De Mortie. If I could find a regimental photo that may have included him, I might be able to single him out from the family photo. The historical society that possesses the photo can only identify George Downing and his wife.
