Thanks so much for your input. Although I haven't received a response from Cynthia regarding Ancestry etc, your suggestion of ordering the military records is as always on target.

Ancestry lists the Civil War vets who applied for pensions. It seems from what I can determine that many USTC vets didn't apply for pensions. Judging from what my ancestor went through, I can understand why...lots of paperwork and having to hire lawyers to dispute the Interior's claims. Are you aware of any study or research done on the numbers who did or didn't apply for pensions?
