Re: Name origins
In Response To: Re: Name origins ()

Mr. Nagle: Thanks much for posting this. A bit of egg on my face: I have long known of this reference, but had not seen it (translation: I had not taken the time to find it) until your posting earlier this AM. I will soon dive back in toe Christian Recorder.

On Henry Carpenter's reference to the dust up at Wilson's Station--
the War Department's "Chronological list of actions, &c., with Indians from January l, l866, to January, l89l" notes that the engagement took place at Wilson's Creek, Kansas on June 26, l867--
that regimental report of the incident shows that Cpl. D. Turner was in command of a detachment of Co. K of the black 38th Infantry--and that five Indians were killed.

[Excuse the racial ID for the 38th--but a lot of folks who know about the 24th and 25th Inf do not know that these units were formed in l869 through the consolidation of the four original black infantry regiments-the 38th, 30th,m 40th and 4lst.]

Interesting, according to Carpenter the Indians used the "N word."
Have to wonder who they learned this from????
