Tom, Thanks -- very interesting. I am also wondering about a time frame the Black regulars accepted the term or started calling themselves "Buffalo Soldiers". Was it in the 1800s, early 1900s, or if modern day researchers and historians read some of the documents you cited and assumed the men accepted the term from its inception as a badge of honor? One would think they may have shown great indignation over a term bestowed upon them by the enemy or their white counterparts, especially when comparing their facial features and hair to that of a Buffalo.
