Frederick Foote was a slave in Fairfax County, Virginia and was recruited by the 1st connecticut Cavalry passing through his neighborhood in March 1862, as a Scout and a Blacksmith. He served as a scout until the surrender of Gen.Lee on April 9,1865 and returned to Fairfax County, bought a farm and died there. One of his grandsons was a member of the 9th Cavalry in Arizona and went to France in WW1, and was a 1st Lt. in the 369th Inf. Regt., "Hell Fighters from Harlem".
