You can apply through Nara, like you would for any military records. The records are of two types, and have to be requested separately. The service record may include descriptive sheet, muster rolls, but generally can be pretty sparse.

If either one applied for a pension, those records are quite wonderful, and can also be requested from Nara.

Costs for Civil War era records are 17.00 for service records and 34.00 for pension records.
