I would like to bring to the attention of the Military Forum an interviewing project of great significance. One of the "guiding lights" of this project is Mr. Bennie McRae, Our Military Forum Manager, who is far too modest to even mention this endeavor.
The Senior Research class of Washington High School from Washingto C.H., Ohio is in the process of interviewing African American veterans from World War II. I attended an interviewing session on the 28th of Dec. in Yellow Springs, Ohio. They interviewed 15 veterans, 6 of whom attended the 60th Anniversary Celebration of D-Day this past June. I'm not sure how many others have been interviewed to date, but the total project will be a considerable number. A truly wonderful project!!!
Those interviewed Tuesday were:
Charles Benning......589th Ambulance Group
Harry Johns..........99yh Field Artillery/French 7th Army
W.O. Ross............1313th General Engineering Battalion
Robert McCormick.....537th Quartermaster/2nd Army
Qunicy Redmom........92nd Division
Lymon Alexander......761st Tank Battalion
Harold Cordell.......Chin-India-Burma (CBI)
Robert Renshaw.......3218 Quartermaster
Charles Mundy........92nd/332nd
Charles Christopher..?????
Waverly Glover.......182nd General Hospital/Medical Company
James Johnson........?????
Delores (January)Wells Douglas...Women's Auxillary (WAC) Det.#2
Thurlow Jefferson....?????
Theodore "Ted" Jackson..1332 Engineer Battalion
What a pleasure it was listening to these gentlemen and feeling the "pride" they felt in sharing their experiences. Tom Brokaw had it right when he named them "The Greatest Generation".
