Re: Question about Civ War pension records

Hang in there, Denise!

I'm going through something similar. I applied to NARA for my ancestor's Civil War military record and/or pension file.
They told me the file was with the VA and gave me a file number (starts with an X -- an X file?) to request from my local VA office.

In my letter to the Veterans Administration I included the basic information about my ancestor that I'd found in my genealogical research: When and where he was born and died, where he was buried, the name of his widow. I also knew his infantry regiment and company. I even mentioned his nickname as well as his legal name.

I wrote three times before the VA acknowledged receipt of my inquiry, but at last they wrote back to tell me that they need more time to find the file and extract the information.

So now I'll wait for my file and hope it's full of information like the one you've alfready got. I hope it will take less than six months to a year before it arrives. Meanwhile, I'm keeping all my correspondence in a file in case I have to start all over again. When the VA didn't respond after two or three months, I re-printed the letter and sent it again with a current date and a new opening: "I'm following up on my previous letter..."
