761st Man & Woman of the Year ...2004

Springfielders Lymon and Charlene Alexander have been named man and woman of the year by the 761st Tank Battalion and Allied Veterans Association of World War II.

As a staff sargeant and platoon leader, Mr. Alexander helped to train mambers of all three units while stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky., from 1941-44. Mr Alexander then served in Europe with the 4030 Truck Company and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge.

The Alexanders received their awards at an Aug.28 reunion in Alexandria, Va., during which they visited the World War II memorial and received an autographed copy of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's book "Brothers In Arms," which tells the story of the three black tank battalions including the 761st.

Lymon and Charlene who have been married 53 years are both retired, but are still very active in church and community activities. Lymon from the adult probation department of the Clark County Common Pleas Court and Charlene from the Springfield City Schools District. They are members of the 2nd Baptist Missionary Church, Springfield, Ohio.
Lymon is a charter member of Zeta Delta Lamda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., while Charlene has held various offices with the Wilberforce-Springfield Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
