Thanks for the information.From what I'm reading here my Uncle would probably been a servant with this unit. The information I have came from a many copied document dated 1914, probably when Hiram (aged 88) was trying to get a pension. It is very illegibile.

I was able to finally see the unit 3rd Mississippi Infantry, Co."A".
I also found in ancestry.com that J.B. McRae was a Lt-Colonel.

The name of the document is "Confederate Records- Jackson County Mississippi", PO BOx that, so I am going to try and contact the authors.
