Tuskegee Airmen focus of talk

Tuskegee Airmen focus of talk

Sunday, October 03, 2004
Huntsville Times

Lacy Ward Jr., an independent scholar and member of the Alabama Humanities Foundation speakers bureau, will present "Preparing the Way: The Tuskegee Airmen and the 'Double V' " at Alabama A&M University Learning Resource Center Multipurpose Room Tuesday at noon.

The Tuskegee Airmen were America's first black aviation squadron, and they amassed the most impressive bomber escort record of any fighter group in World War II.

Before that, however, the airmen had to achieve victory over segregation at home in Alabama. The airmen laid the foundation for the foot soldiers of the civil rights movement. Thus, they achieved a "double V," victory at home and abroad.

This free presentation will explore the airmen's backgrounds, training, missions and impact following the war. It will also discuss plans to preserve their legacy at Moton Field in Tuskegee.
