John Culver aka Port McNeill served with both Confederate and Union armies during the Civil War. His federal military pension package contained over 300 pages, revealing much about his life.
John began having difficulty with his vision while he served with the 58th. He was totally blind by 1868. One of the things I found interesting is that he received over $10, 000 in pension and that he needed a guardian which the court appointed his former slave owner, George A. McNeill.
