WANTED - African American WWII Reenactors
Permission to post granted by Mr. George Hardy
Dear Mr. McRae,
My name is George Hardy, I am an African American WWII Reenactor. I focus on enlightening people on the contributions of African Americans during WWII. As the son of a WWII vet, I have a keen interest in this topic. I have been reenacting for over 10 years, starting with Civil War, but in the last five years focusing on WWII. I have portrayed Quartermaster troops assigned to White combat units and Black combatants in the ETO. I live in suburban Maryland, outside of Washington, D.C., and there are a ton of WWII events that occur each year within 2-3 hours driving time.
I am interested in forming a squad of highly motivated, extremely accurate and authentic African American WWII GI reencators. My purpose again is simple: We need to tell our own story and our presence on the reenacting and living history field brings about a sense of awareness of our contributions to the entire population. Our presence would also inspire pride in our community and could be a rallying point to get our folks interested in our history.
I currently have a ton of original pictures (units and individuals) of Black GIs that I have collected over the years. I enjoy speaking to our veterans whenever possible; as their stories are so insightful and enriching.
I am not sure you ever get requests for information on joining groups like this, but I would appreciate it if you would use me as a contact for any African Americans who express an interest in WWII reenacting. If we have an opportunity to discuss my ideas, and if you feel that it is appropriate, I would appreciate it if you would create a link from your site, so that anyone who is interested would have immediate access to me as a contact.
I sincerely hope that I am not imposing on you. I admire your site and I have watched it grow over the years. Some of the best information I have collected has come from your site or its' links.
Please let me know what you think of this idea and I would appreciate any ideas that you may have about getting this concept off to a start.
All the best and thanks in advance.
P.S. I own a WWII truck: a 1944 Dodge 3/4 ton Weapons carrier that I carry out to the field. It is completely restored and it has won awards at Military vehicle shows.
