In conversation with Dad tonight he revealed that he thought he should have received a Silver Star in Korea instead of a Bronze Star. He was a 1st Lt and a forward observer with field artillery. When his infantry company commander was killed, he and the jeep driver assumed command. Dad put the driver, a corporal, in for a Silver Star but, as far as he knows, no one ever recommended him.
When I was a teen I came upon a commendation describing Dad's bravery in Korea which, if memory serves, involved crawling to safety under fire carrying an injured comrade on his back. I remember the feeling so proud when I read that about my father. At that moment he seemed like a superhero to me. I have a lot of other papers but can't find that particular one.
Dad will turn 87 in August and I would like to get a copy of the commendation. How do I go about doing that? I have been scouring the NARA site all night and am more confused than when I started. It keeps sending me back to the DD 214 which I have. Help!
Also, want to know whether it is possible to reopen a review of his record to see whether he should have gotten a Silver rather than a Bronze Star. If the jeep driver received the Silver that would certainly recommend dad as well.
Thanks for any and all help. I'm on a tear now. LOL.
