John Oliver, Civil War 17 U.S. Col'd. Infantry
Thanks to Afrigeneas researcher S R Gaines I think I now have found my grandfather's father:
Info from Soldiers and Sailors site:
He is also listed in the pension index at ancestry.com:
John Oliver, Hannah Oliver Tennessee, Contest Widow “Iowa” Oliver 2547
What is indexed as "Iowa Oliver", contesting widow is more than likely my gr grandmother Lou Ella Oliver.
Info on 17 Regiment from Parks Service website:
UNITED STATES COLORED TROOPS
17th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry
SERVICE.-Duty at McMinnville and Murfreesboro, Tenn., till November, 1864. Battle of Nashville, Tenn., December 15-16. Overton Hill December 16. Pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River December 17-27. I have sent for the forms from NARA and hopefully will have news in about 16 weeks.
I am very excited about this - my search for my great grandfather was going nowhere fast. Hopefully the pension files since tey were contested will provide some interesting details.
