Re: Roster of 371st Infantry Regiment, WW1

My Grandfather was an officer with Co. D, 1st Bn., 371st Infantry in France.

I have, just yesterday, come across a brief company history that he wrote and a detailed account of an attack on Cote (hill) 188. during the Champaign Offensive, Sept. 1918.

In this information, there is a list of officers from the 1st Battalion.

Major Joseph B. Pate, Commanding
1st Lt. David P. Belcher, Surgeon
1st Lt. Nollie M. Patton, Adjutant.
2nd Lt. Walter M. Thompson, Supply Officer

"B" Company
Capt. Robert L. Brunson, Commanding
1st Lt. Thomas D. Lake, Jr.
1st Lt. Allen G. Thurman, Jr.
1st Lt. Monette, C. Ford
1st Lt. Benjamin F. Simmons
2nd Lt. Cherry Steele

"C" Company
Note: C Company was virtually wiped out on 28 Sept. while attacking Hill 188. There was heavy fog and Company C was advancing toward the summit where they encountered a group of German machine gunners under a flag of surrender. The platoon commanders ordered their troops to cease fire because the Germans were surrendering. When C Company was about 100 meters from the parapet, the Germans dropped back into their positions and began an interlocking band of machinegun fire and mortar fire. I have much more about this event, but I have not had time to transcribe it to computer.

Capt. Phillip Wharton, Commanding
1st Lt. Carlos G. Harris
1st Lt. Sammuel R. Bryson (killed in ambush)
1st Lt. James G. Ramsay (killed in ambush)
2nd Lt. Robert H. Riggs

"D" Company
Note: 1st Lt. Boswell, commander of D company was killed recconoitering the enemy's position prior to the assault on Hill 188. The command of Co. D then fell to Lt. Boulware (my Grandfather) who led the final assault on the summit that took Hill 188.

1st Lt. James A. Boswell, Commanding (until killed)
1st Lt. Marcus B. Boulware, my Grandfather
1st Lt. G. Carroll Swetenburg
2nd Lt. Glen F. Strole
2nd Lt. Frank Wise
2nd Lt. James C. Alexander

Machine Gun Company
Capt. Russel C. Woody, Commanding
1st Lt. John A. Lytle
1st Lt. Wilbur K. Mattison1st Lt. Samuel D. Turtletaub
2nd Lt. Andrew S. Nelson
2nd Lt. Hugh M. Richardon
2nd Lt. Earl M. Thompson

I hope this information is of benefit to your search. I will be putting the battalion history into the computer when I can.

Sincerely,
Joe Tenison
