My Grandfather was an officer with Co. D, 1st Bn., 371st Infantry in France.
I have, just yesterday, come across a brief company history that he wrote and a detailed account of an attack on Cote (hill) 188. during the Champaign Offensive, Sept. 1918.
In this information, there is a list of officers from the 1st Battalion.
Major Joseph B. Pate, Commanding
1st Lt. David P. Belcher, Surgeon
1st Lt. Nollie M. Patton, Adjutant.
2nd Lt. Walter M. Thompson, Supply Officer
Capt. Robert L. Brunson, Commanding
1st Lt. Thomas D. Lake, Jr.
1st Lt. Allen G. Thurman, Jr.
1st Lt. Monette, C. Ford
1st Lt. Benjamin F. Simmons
2nd Lt. Cherry Steele
Note: C Company was virtually wiped out on 28 Sept. while attacking Hill 188. There was heavy fog and Company C was advancing toward the summit where they encountered a group of German machine gunners under a flag of surrender. The platoon commanders ordered their troops to cease fire because the Germans were surrendering. When C Company was about 100 meters from the parapet, the Germans dropped back into their positions and began an interlocking band of machinegun fire and mortar fire. I have much more about this event, but I have not had time to transcribe it to computer.
