Re: General background for some of us non-historia

Lee, I understand where you are coming from and to a point I can be sympathetic, but the reality is that Cold Mountain was not a movie with its theme centered on the Battle of the Crater or the USCT units that fought and died there, this film was not about their story. It was indeed a love story that sustained itself in the mist of this Nations most tumultuous period. The love story is the central theme here. No one who has a desire to learn about the role of the USCT in the Civil War or the Battle of the Crater for that matter are going to use this film as a source of information. Albeit the movie attracts the criticism and scrutiny of the historian and researcher for its inaccurate portrayals, but even here these “fellows” have to allow the writer or director the freedom to write or produce a fictitious story or film as they see it. It is not to you or me, historians, researchers and Black Activist that this film is being marketed, frankly, it is a vast majority of white women who would and are going to see this film and yes they are taking their husbands and boyfriends along. Oh and yes Lee, the SCV, DCV, confederate and white union and a few Black reenactors will go see this movie as well, the former will cheer at the slaughter and defeat heaped on the USCT in the film, the latter will criticize the combat tactics or portrayal of the fighting.

Buffalo Soldiers, Glory and Tuskegee Airman to name a few were the most recent films that center on and were totally dedicated to the roles portrayed by Black troops in combat. We expect films like these to be historically accurate because of the theme and its content, unfortunately we find ourselves disappointed at the lack of either. Even here the writer and the director exercise their right to tell it as they see it and as they view it, it has to sell. It is not about truth…it is however all about the “Benjamin’s Baby”
