Re: Civil War - "New England Negro Regiments"
In Response To: Civil War - "New England Negro Regiments" ()
There are two very important parts to this article-first look at the date-it predated the official formation of the Bureau of Colored Troops (May 1863) and is in the time frame of Hunter in the South, Kansas and is part of a missing piece-Those Rhode Island free blacks.
The Governor had offered to raise a regiment of Black troops PRIOR to the raising of the 54th and 55th in Massachusetts. There are official documents verifying this fact. What I have been unable to verify at this time, is just what happened to them. The 14th RI Heavy Artillery was formed later-and there is little other mention of these men. Conjecture would say they may have gone to Massachusetts, since the Governor had offered assistance to Gov. Andrew, but at this time, I just don't have the facts. If anyone has other info on this group, I would be very grateful.
