THE NEW ENGLAND NEGRO REGIMENTS. - There will be a great time
in New York when the New England negro regiments pass through
on their way to Washington. The Rhode Island regiment will
probably be small, as there are said to be only five hundred
able bodied male darkeys in that State; but then it will be
headed by Governor Sprague, as he promised in his bulletin.
The Massachusetts regiment will probably be full, and we hope
that Governor Andrew will lead it down Broadway and into
action. Garnett, Greeley and the other New York negroes will
turn out in their Sunday clothes to receive these regiments.
Wendell Phillips ought to go as chaplain to one of them, and
Beecher should join the other. What a fine sight it will be to
see these regiments parading down Broadway, and halting at the
Tribune office for lemonade, gin, speeches and other
refreshments. We hope that the appearance of so many darkeys
in military toggery may warm poor Greeley up to the fighting
point; and if he will enlist in either of these negro
regiments we will give him one hundred dollars extra bounty on
the spot.
